Tapering and Stopping Biologic Therapy in RA

Tapering and Stopping Biologic Therapy in RA

A significant minority of RA patients achieve sustained remission following treatment with biologic drugs. The total drug budget for biologic therapy is growing steadily (at a~£1.9M pa in NHSGGC), and efforts to reduce the drug spend are welcome. The growth in the use of biologics has also created a significant clinical and administrative workload in secondary care. This proposal involved setting up a biologic tapering clinic run by a clinical nurse specialist; this was facilitated by the appointment of an administrative assistant to deal with the paperwork associated with biologic prescriptions through homecare companies thereby releasing the biologics nurse for more clinical work.
