Medical Appraisal Toolkits

[ 29/08/2023 Update: Following updated guidance re preparing for appraisals, as well as the latest Good Medical Practice 2024 (which will come into effect from 30 January 2024), we are in the process of updating all toolkits and other information on the website.  Please bear with us if the information you come across in this section doesn't correspond with the latest guidance.  We hope to update this all ASAP. ]

Regardless of your role, as part of your medical appraisal each year you are asked to produce supporting information of clinical and educational activities covering the whole scope of your practice, which evidences and reflects your commitment to delivering and improving on high standard of patient care.

Your supporting information should demonstrate that you have considered and evaluated:

  • the quality of your work;
  • the impact on patient care; and
  • changes in behaviour and practice where appropriate.
Your appraisal offers you an opportunity to discuss this and reflect on all aspects of your practice with your appraiser, which may highlight areas for further development.

The toolkits listed below are designed to help you prepare for your appraisal, focussing on supporting information. We have tried to develop materials to support all doctors working in primary and secondary care.  If you think anything is missing or inaccurate, please let us know (SOAR@nes.scot.nhs.uk).

For information specifically on appraisal, appraisal forms on SOAR and SOAR processes itself, please visit the relevant sections instead.  The toolkits below focusses specifically on supporting information.
