First appraisal anxieties

The video was recorded for the purposes of facilitating learner discussions at the Medical Appraisal Scotland appraiser training events.

Simulated discussion of an appraiser concerned at meeting the appraisee for their first appraisal remotely rather than face-to-face.

For discussion:

Many appraisals are carried out remotely online using tools like Teams and Zoom.  the pandemic has normalised the use of this technology and we have all grown accustomed to it but in terms of medical appraisals, there is a small degree of anxiety of meeting someone on-screen for the first time in such a formal process.  In this example, using the pandemic as the backdrop, both the appraiser and appraisee have expressed concerns of remote/online appraisals.

Did the appraisal discussion flow well?  What appraiser skills worked well in this discussion?  What might you do differently?  Did the online setting hamper the appraiser or appraisee to speak freely?  What difference would a face-to-face meeting make?

Video reflection:

After you have reviewed the video, consider the following:

  • Is the video a "High-Quality" appraisal?
    • If yes – what did the appraiser do that you thought was good?
    • If no – why not?
  • If you were the appraiser, how would you have facilitated that discussion?
  • Did you pick up on any cues from the appraisee?
  • What feedback would you give the appraiser?
  • What questions, if any, would you like to ask the tutors on training day?
  • What learning are you taking away from this video?

Use the training course workbook to log your reflections (or you can use the standalone reflective template below instead).

This simulated appraisal discussion is not intended to be the "perfect appraisal": it should be seen as examples of appraisal techniques and is designed as a talking point for training course discussions.  The discussions are based on the roleplaying appraiser/appraisee's own experience.  Any similarities with others' experience is entirely coincidental.

We suggest that, if you have time, you should review the other training videos.

The video was recorded for the purposes of facilitating learners discussions at the Medical Appraisal Scotland appraiser training courses.  They are designed as learning tools to stimulate discussions rather than prime examples.

The appraisee and appraiser on the clip are roleplaying. The material portrayed does not relate to any actual appraisals but is based on the roleplayers' experience of appraisal gained over a number of years. Any similarity with others' experience is entirely coincidental.

Questions to consider from this video:

  • If you were the appraiser, what would you do in advance of the appraisal?
  • What appraisal skills worked well in this discussion?
  • What would you do differently?
